A pair of studies provides evidence that chiropractic care can be helpful in treating CTS.
One study included 25 participants diagnosed with CTS. They reported significant improvement in strength, range of motion and pain after chiropractic treatment. Most of the improvements lasted at least six months.
A second study divided a group of 91 CTS patients in half. Half received chiropractic care (manipulation of soft tissue and bony joints of the upper extremities and spine, ultrasound, and a wrist splint). The other half received conservative medical care (wrist supports and ibuprofen). Both groups experienced significant improvement in nerve function, finger sensation, and comfort. The researchers concluded that chiropractic treatment and conservative medical care are equally effective for CTS.
Just as nerves in your back sometimes get pinched by the bones in your spine, the bones in your wrist can also compress nearby nerves, causing carpal tunnel syndrome. So chiropractic treatment for CTS typically begins with manipulation of the affected wrist and elbow, as well as manipulation of the upper spine.
Chiropractors may also employ soft tissue treatments to release muscle tension and remove adhesions that could be impinging on the nerves. They may recommend exercises to minimize muscle strain and improve small muscle strength, offer nutritional advice, and provide suggestions on ways to modify the work environment to prevent repetitive stress.
