With cold and flu season well under way, you should know that chiropractic adjustments can help strengthen your immune system to help you fight off the flu – or at least minimize its symptoms.
If you live in Boise, Eagle or Meridian, Idaho, you might include a visit to Ideal Spine on your holiday to-do list.
Ample evidence supports the claim that chiropractic boosts your immunity. Consider the flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918, when chiropractic patients had a much reduced death rate compared with non-chiropractic patients. An article published in Psychology Today in 2006 reports that the death rate among flu victims under chiropractic care was 0.25 percent – compared with 5 percent rate among flu victims who were not chiropractic patients.
A groundbreaking 1989 study compared the immune systems of 107 patients who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more with members of the general public and patients with terminal illnesses. The research was conducted by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University. His results: The chiropractic patients’ immune function was 200 percent better than that of people who had not received chiropractic care, and 400 percent better than patients with terminal disease.
In 1994, a group of HIV-positive patients at the Sid E. Williams Research Center of Life Chiropractic University were adjusted over a six-month period. Those who were adjusted had a 48 percent increase in CD4 cells, the immune system cells most impacted by HIV and AIDS. By contrast, the control group of non-adjusted patients showed an 8 percent decrease in CD4 cell counts over the same period.
What’s the relationship between chiropractic adjustment and your immune system? The nervous system – which is housed in your spinal cord – works with the immune system to keep the body functioning at peak efficiency. But when a spinal vertebra is out of alignment, that misalignment can put pressure on the nerves, interfering with the signals the nervous system sends to the immune system. Like a hose with a kink in it, your body stops operating efficiently.
The solution is Chiropractic BioPhysics, which can rehabilitate the spine, reshape it, and restore your immune system back to health.
